Where we work
City-specific guides — what works in your patch, the best suburbs to start in, and how the Self Made playbook adapts. We work nationwide; these are the cities with the most depth on the site so far.

Auckland
Auckland
Auckland is one third of NZ. Almost every service business idea works somewhere in Auckland — the question is which suburb cluster fits your kit, your transport range and the rate you want to charge. The premium pockets (North Shore, Eastern Bays, inner Mt Eden / Grey Lynn) pay 30–50% more than equivalent work in regional NZ. Competition is real, but suburb-specific SEO still wins.

Wellington
Wellington
Wellington's hill geography compresses everything. Most homes are weatherboard or cedar on slopes — moss, wind, sea-air weathering keep exterior services in constant demand. The customer base is professional, time-poor and well-paid. Lawn mowing struggles (small or no lawn on most sections), but cleaning, house washing, gutter work, dog walking and mobile detailing all do unusually well per capita.

Canterbury
Christchurch
Christchurch is one of the easiest NZ cities to start a service business in right now. The suburb spread is wide, demand is steady, and Google's local pack is genuinely uncrowded across most of Canterbury — a properly set-up website ranks in 4–6 weeks. Lawn mowing, cleaning, house washing, end-of-tenancy and pool maintenance all have real headroom.

Waikato
Hamilton
Hamilton is one of NZ's fastest-growing cities and the local services market is genuinely undersupplied. New subdivisions in Rototuna, Flagstaff and Te Awa are spitting out new homeowners faster than the existing operators can keep up. Strong launch market for lawn mowing, house washing, fencing and cleaning — pool, holiday-property and dog grooming are weaker fits.

Bay of Plenty
Tauranga
Tauranga is the highest-yield service business market in NZ for outdoor + senior-aligned services. Older homeowner demographic, premium ratecard, mild year-round climate. Lawn mowing, house washing, gardening, gutter cleaning, pool maintenance, holiday-property cleaning and senior-help businesses all do unusually well. End-of-tenancy + section clearing + freelance wedding work struggle here vs metros.

Otago
Dunedin
Dunedin's hilly geography + Victorian/Edwardian housing stock + Otago Uni rental cycles create a specific service-business shape. Cool damp climate makes moss + algae + gutter work essentially year-round. Student-rental turnover (Feb + Nov peak) drives end-of-tenancy volume. Local pack is genuinely uncrowded.

Manawatū-Whanganui
Palmerston North
Palmerston North is the Manawatū's service hub — Massey University + Linton Army Camp + RNZAF Ohakea drive a constantly-churning rental market and steady demand for property-manager-driven services. Lawn mowing, end-of-tenancy + house washing fit cleanly. Holiday-property + pool maintenance + freelance wedding work struggle here.

Northland
Whangārei
Whangārei is Northland's service hub — subtropical climate keeps lawns growing 11+ months a year, drives chronic moss demand, and supports pool ownership rare for this latitude. Older homeowner demographic + dispersed lifestyle blocks across the wider Northland make for varied work. The catch: long drive times if your patch isn't tight.

Taranaki
New Plymouth
New Plymouth is Taranaki's service hub — oil + gas wages create premium-spend pockets in Vogeltown + Strandon, mild climate supports year-round lawn growth, and Tasman wind + sea-air weathering make exterior services constant. Strong fits: lawn mowing, house washing, residential cleaning, pool maintenance, junk removal. Holiday-property + section-clearing + freelance wedding all weaker.

Hawke's Bay
Hastings
Hastings is Hawke's Bay's horticultural heart — apple orchards, vineyards, lifestyle blocks across Bridge Pa + Twyford + Maraekakaho. Section-clearing + fencing + garden maintenance are unusually strong because of the lifestyle-block + orchard infrastructure. Havelock North brings the older premium homeowner demographic. Pair this base with Napier for full Hawke's Bay coverage.

Waikato
Cambridge
Cambridge is NZ's equine capital + the Waikato's wealthiest lifestyle-belt town. Section-clearing + post-and-rail fencing + paddock + lifestyle-block work are unusually strong because of the equestrian property mix. Older premium homeowner demographic in Cambridge proper layers a recurring residential market on top. Pair with Hamilton for full Waikato coverage.

Otago
Queenstown
Queenstown is NZ's #1 tourism economy by far — 30k residents, 3M+ visitor nights a year. Holiday-property cleaning is the dominant service business; second-home maintenance, mobile car detailing, and exterior wash are all unusually strong. The young resident demographic means senior-help businesses struggle here despite the wider region's wealth.

Otago
Wanaka
Wanaka is Queenstown's quieter cousin — same alpine + second-home dynamic, smaller scale, slightly older demographic. Holiday-property cleaning is the dominant business; second-home maintenance, house washing, mobile car detailing all run hot. Less competitive than Queenstown for everyday-residential services. Population is growing fast and operator supply isn't keeping up.

Bay of Plenty
Rotorua
Rotorua sits between regional-city and tourism-town — 75k residents plus a steady tourism economy. Sulphur in the air weathers exteriors faster than most NZ cities; mature suburbs (Springfield, Whakarewarewa, Western Heights) skew older + homeowner-heavy. Strong fits: residential cleaning, holiday-property cleaning, house washing, lawn mowing, garden maintenance. Weaker: wedding-economy work, dog grooming, premium personal training.

Hawke's Bay
Napier
Napier has one of NZ's oldest population profiles — 22% of residents are 65+. The Art Deco + heritage housing stock + sea air weathering means exterior maintenance is constant. Senior-services, lawn mowing, gardening, exterior wash and gutter cleaning all do unusually well. Section clearing + holiday-property + premium personal training are weaker fits.

Tasman
Nelson
Nelson is the Top of the South's service hub — older retiree demographic, mild sunny climate, sea-air weathering on coastal homes, Abel Tasman + Marlborough Sounds tourism flow on the fringe. Lawn mowing, residential cleaning, gardening, gutter cleaning + senior-help services all do well. Section-clearing + freelance make-up + premium personal training are weaker fits.

Southland
Invercargill
Invercargill is Southland's service hub — older homeowner demographic, lower property prices than the rest of NZ, cool damp climate that drives chronic moss + algae. Lawn mowing, residential cleaning, house washing, gutter cleaning, errand-running for elderly all do well. Pool maintenance + holiday-property + freelance wedding all weaker fits. Local pack is genuinely uncrowded — least competitive metro market in NZ.

Gisborne
Gisborne
Gisborne is the East Cape's service hub — mild east-coast climate, isolated geography, strong Māori cultural economy + sheep/beef + viticulture base. Lawn mowing, fencing-repair (heavy post-Cyclone-Gabrielle demand still flowing), house washing, residential cleaning + section-clearing all real fits. Holiday-property + freelance wedding markets are thin given the scale.

Marlborough
Blenheim
Blenheim is Marlborough's service hub — NZ's biggest wine region drives a viticulture-adjacent economy, retiree migration drives an older premium demographic, and RNZAF Woodbourne adds steady property-manager-driven turnover. Lawn mowing, residential cleaning, garden maintenance, errand-running for elderly + holiday-property cleaning all do well. Pool + freelance wedding work weaker per-capita than the demographic suggests.

West Coast
Greymouth
Greymouth is the West Coast's main service hub — small (~10k), wet (NZ's highest rainfall), older demographic, isolated geography. House washing + gutter cleaning + lawn mowing all do well because of chronic moss + mild year-round growing conditions. Specialist services (pool, freelance make-up, mobile dog grooming) struggle because the addressable market is too small. Local pack is essentially uncontested.

Canterbury
Timaru
Timaru is South Canterbury's service hub — older homeowner demographic, mid-tier port + dairy economy, frosty Canterbury winters that kill grass growth Jun–Aug. Lawn mowing peaks Oct–Mar; residential cleaning + house washing + senior-help services + gutter + garden all year-round. Section-clearing in the South Canterbury hinterland real but dispersed.
Twenty-one cities live across every NZ region. If you're in a smaller town not listed here, the playbook still works — just say so on the apply form and we'll come back with a scoped-for-your-patch proposal. We work nationwide.
